We were all devastated by the news, but we were determined to make the best of it. We find a prosthetist who worked with us to make my father a custom-made prosthetic leg. The prosthetist was very nice and explained to us the purpose of the prosthetic leg. He told us it would allow my father to walk and move around more easily even with only one leg. He also said that the leg would be custom-fit to my father's body, allowing him to move freely and comfortably. After the prosthetist had all the measurements he needed, he began customizing the leg to meet my father's needs. He started with a vacuum formed thermal plastic socket, which would be formed to fit my father's body shape and size. He then added foam and cloth linings for comfort. After that, he attached the artificial knee joint and foot, along with the necessary straps and buckles for adjustment. The prosthetist then worked with us on a "test-fit", making sure the leg fit comfortably and was adjustable enough for future growth. Then he showed us how to put it on my father and how to adjust it for the most comfort and best fit. The prosthetist sent my father home with a new prosthesis, and my father was ecstatic! With the help of his new prosthetic leg, he was able to do the things he enjoyed doing before the accident. To this day, my father remains very proud of his prosthetic leg. It has made him stronger, more active, and a master of his own destiny.
