Upper limbs prosthetics serve as a rehabilitation device to restore an amputee's autonomous control and social integration. They come in various types, and selecting the right prosthetic for a particular user is a complex process. With the right information, it is possible to select the optimal prosthetics for your individual needs.
Upper Limb Prosthetics can be divided into three categories: Externally Powered, Body Powered and Cosmesis.
Externally Powered prosthetics: are driven by electric motors and use sensors to detect motion and are more responsive. There are three main components: A controller, a power source, and a hand.
Body Powered prosthetics: are operated with straps or harnesses connected to the user’s body and are less expensive and mechanically simpler. These prosthetics consist of a terminal device (that serves as an artificial hand/arm), as well as the straps to operate them.
Cosmesis prosthetics: serve mostly aesthetic purposes and are often lightweight and made with child friendly designs. These prosthetics are less functional, but can help the user feel more connected and accepted in social settings.
The selection of the right prosthetic should be based on the individual needs, lifestyle, preferences and budget. An assessment by a prosthetic specialist is usually recommended to help find the most suitable device.
Upper limb prosthetics demonstrate medical, psychological and social advances that can help improve an amputee’s quality of life. The availability of different tool types and designs allows users to choose the best device for their needs, restoring some of their autonomy and independence.
